Current Projects

Bristol Avon Rivers Trust: RiverBlitz

The Bristol Avon Rivers Trust (BART) has been running its RiverBlitz citizen science project since 2016. This project aims to encourage members of the public to engage with their local waterways, whilst collecting valuable data on river health in their catchment.

RiverBlitz Explorer

BART source data across their whole catchment

In 2020, BART sought to expand this project significantly, raising its public profile and increasing the number of volunteers taking part. The Congregate platform allowed BART to achieve this by providing a streamlined interface where the volunteers could register and enter their results. Using this platform BART's team were able to see who had registered, manage the distribution of their water sampling kits, and check the results once they had been recorded.

RiverBlitz Explorer Measurement

Visualising the data recorded by BART Volunteers

The results gathered by BART's volunteers were displayed publicly through the Congregate platform, which could visualise the data simply and clearly. As a result, BART could better target their conservation efforts, increasing the awareness and visibility of challenges impacting rivers by making vital data accessible. The site was integrated into BART's website and customised to include the project's branding.

Bristol Avon Rivers Trust: River Detectives

BART River Detectives involves volunteers from local communities conducting long-term water quality monitoring of key sections of the River Chew, Bristol Frome and the Cam, Wellow and Midford Brooks.

River Detectives Explorer

The River Detectives Data Explorer

Volunteers have an important role to play in filling the gaps in water quality monitoring, crucial at a time when Environment Agency monitoring is being reduced. The project also aims to reconnect people with their local watercourse by empowering local communities with a sense of ownership, which we hope will create a legacy. BART River Detectives supplements RiverBlitz by collecting water quality data at regular intervals to help build an evidence base which builds a picture of the overall health of the river catchment.

Bristol Avon Rivers Trust: River Detectives - Flood Watch

When it is ready the Data Explorer will display all the data collected by volunteers who are gathering vital information about flooding in the Bristol Avon catchment. The scheme is currently in its pilot phase with test sites selected around the Midsomer and Radstock areas.
